Leaks under the sink
Check the cupboard under your sink now and again. Common culprits are the trap, the waste connection, the flexible tap tails and appliance connections. A slow drip can soak the cupboard base for months before you notice. Most of these are quick fixes.
Blocked kitchen sinks
Fat and oil are the main cause. They go down as liquid and set as they cool, catching food scraps until the pipe closes up. Wipe greasy pans with kitchen roll before washing them. If the sink is already slow, clearing the trap underneath (with a bowl in place) sometimes sorts it. If not, ring us. Avoid strong chemical drain cleaners, which can damage older pipes.
Plumbing for a new kitchen
If you are having a new kitchen fitted, the plumbing needs to be planned before units go in. We can:
- Move supply and waste pipes to suit the new layout
- Fit isolation valves for the sink and each appliance
- Connect the sink, taps and appliances once units are in
- Check the existing pipework while it is exposed
It is a good time to check for lead pipes too. Bristol Water says homes built before the 1970s could have lead pipework, and the supply pipe often comes in near the kitchen.
Kitchens in Totterdown terraces
In many Victorian terraces, the kitchen is in a rear extension or back room, added or rebuilt over the years. Waste pipes may run some distance to reach the drain, and space is often tight. We will find the neatest, most accessible route for new pipework.
Questions
Can you fit a kitchen tap I have bought?
Yes. Tell us the model when you ring, so we can check it suits your sink and pipework.
Do you fit kitchens?
We do the plumbing. For units and worktops, you will need a kitchen fitter. We are happy to work alongside them.
Why does my sink smell?
Often a build-up in the trap, or a trap that has dried out. If cleaning it does not help, ring us.
