Washing machine and dishwasher plumbing in Totterdown

Plumbing in washing machines, dishwashers and fridges with water supplies. New connections, leaks and drainage problems.

What we do

  • Plumbing in washing machines and dishwashers
  • Adding new water supplies and waste connections
  • Fitting isolation valves for each appliance
  • Fixing leaks from supply hoses and connections
  • Clearing blocked appliance waste pipes and standpipes
  • Connecting water supplies to fridges with ice or water dispensers

We work on the plumbing only. If an appliance itself has a fault, such as a pump, motor or control board, you will need an appliance repair engineer. Any new electrical socket or spur needs an electrician.

Signs of a plumbing problem behind an appliance

  • Water on the floor after a wash, especially at the back
  • The machine will not drain, or drains slowly
  • Water appears in the kitchen sink when the machine empties
  • Gurgling or bad smells from the sink
  • The machine will not fill, or fills slowly

A machine that will not fill can be as simple as a closed or stiff valve on the supply. Check the little lever valve on the pipe behind the machine is in line with the pipe (open).

Plumbing in a new appliance

  1. Tell us where it is going. Kitchen, utility, bathroom or under the stairs, and what is already there.
  2. We check the supply and waste. If there are existing connections, we check they are suitable and not leaking.
  3. We add what is missing. A cold feed with an isolation valve, and a waste connection to a standpipe or the sink trap.
  4. We connect and test. Running a fill and drain to make sure nothing leaks.

Small kitchens, older homes

Totterdown’s Victorian terraces often have compact kitchens, sometimes in a rear extension added long after the house was built. Space behind appliances is tight, and waste pipes sometimes run a long way to reach the drain. If a new machine is going somewhere without existing plumbing, we will work out the neatest route for the pipes.

Hard water and appliances

Bristol Water describes its water as moderately hard to very hard. Limescale can build up in appliance valves and hoses over time. Following the manufacturer’s advice on descaling and using the right detergent helps.

Questions

Can you fix my washing machine?

We fix the plumbing around it: supply, waste and leaks. Faults inside the machine need an appliance repair engineer.

Do you remove old appliances?

Tell us when you ring and we will let you know what we can do.

Can you plumb a dishwasher where there was not one before?

Usually, yes. It depends on where the supply and waste pipes are. We will talk it through when you ring.
